Mick Schumacher signed a long-term contract with F1 Haas team on December 2, playing from season 2021.
Team leader Gunther Steiner said: “I am delighted to announce that Mick Schumacher will play for Haas from 2021. I am very eager to welcome him into the team. For a long time, F2 was the incubator for F1 talent. F2 has been the most exciting race this season. Mick has won many races, has podium a lot and excelled against many strong opponents.”
Schumacher won the F1 championship in 1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004. His record of seven championships was hit by Lewis Hamilton this season. Michael suffered a ski accident in December 2013, leading to serious brain damage. Since then, he has not appeared in public.
Mick Schumacher is leading F2 with a 14 point difference from Callum Ilott, with only one leg left. He will start getting acquainted with the Haas car from the FP1 test track, at the last F1 race this season in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
“I am extremely happy and choked at the prospect of playing in F1,” said the 21-year-old German driver. “I want to thank the Haas team, Ferrari and Ferrari training academy for trusting me. I also want to express my love for my parents, I owe everything to them. I will try my best as usual.”
Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin will play for Haas next season, replacing Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen. Nikita Mazepin is third at F2, 42 points behind Mick Schumacher. He is the son of Russian billionaire Dmitry Mazepin. This billionaire is looking to buy Haas.
Mick is the son of seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher, with Corinna Schumacher. He has an older sister, Gina-Maria. Mick won the F3 Championship in 2018.
